No. AI games and local pass-and-play work fully offline. A connection is only needed for online matches, tournament rooms, leaderboards and sign-in.
No email or password — online play uses anonymous sign-in. You just pick a username, which you can change anytime.
Ten tiers run from Novice up to Grandmaster, each one searching deeper than the last. Level 1 is free so you can learn the ropes; levels 2–10 unlock with premium. If a tier feels impossible, drop down one and practise there first.
The hint button asks the AI for the strongest move in the current position, undo takes back your last move, and helper highlights mark legal targets on the board. They are learning aids — switch highlights off once you read positions confidently.
Eight board themes are available, from Classic Azure to Celestial Zenith. Unlock one theme for $1, or go lifetime ($7) for every theme and AI level forever. Purchases restore automatically when you reinstall with the same Play account.
Create a private room and share its code with a friend, join quick match for an instant opponent, or enter tournament lobbies. Online games use turn timers with resign and draw handling, and leaderboard results are finalised server-side so nobody can fake a score.
The stats screen tracks wins, losses, draws, your best streak and records per variant. Fourteen achievements — from First Steps and Local Heroes to Grandmaster — unlock as you play and are stored on your device.
